Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva tragically died in a car accident in Spain, the Portuguese FA confirmed in a statement that paid tribute to both players.
The Portuguese Football Federation described Jota as not only an exceptional player with nearly 50 caps for Portugal but also an extraordinary person, respected by teammates, opponents and his community.
The Federation extended its deepest condolences to the family and friends of both players, as well as to Liverpool FC and FC Penafiel.
The Portuguese FA has requested UEFA to observe a minute’s silence ahead of Portugal’s Women’s European Championship match against Spain, which kicks off at 12:30?a.m.
The passing of Diogo and André Silva represents irreparable losses for Portuguese football, and we will do everything to honour their legacy daily,” the Portugal federation said.

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 and quickly established himself as a vital part of Jurgen Klopp’s attacking options.
Known for his sharp movement, pressing intensity and eye for goal, Jota made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals in the Premier League and Europe.
His time at Anfield saw him lift the Premier League title, FA Cup, and two League Cups, adding depth, energy and crucial goals to Liverpool’s attack.
For Portugal, Jota earned 49 caps, scored 14 goals and played an important role in both of the country’s UEFA Nations League triumphs in 2019 and 2025.
Though gone far too soon, Diogo Jota’s spirit and legacy will live on in the hearts of the football world and everyone who watched him play.
